Torsionally stiff, but radially flexible - CENTA optimises construction machinery

 ← back...

For the first time at the bauma in Munich CENTA Antriebe Kirschey GmbH will showcase a coupling developed for the special requirements of Diesel-driven construction machinery from April 23 29, 2007. CENTAFLEX-KE covers torque ranges up to 650 Nm. It features high torsional stiffness combined with a certain radial flexibility, thus essentially optimising hydrostatic Diesel engines, especially in the low and medium power range.

Diesel-driven hydrostatic machinery with flange mounted pumps has so far mostly been connected by torsionally stiff couplings. Excavators, vibratory rollers, loaders and many other machines and vehicles are equipped with these torsionally stiff couplings shifting dangerous resonances to speed ranges above operational speed. The advantage of the desired torsional stiffness however is outweighed by the associated radial stiffness. Relatively high reaction forces are encountered in case of radial misalignment which may damage the coupling as well as connected shafts and bearings. Although such drives are flange-mounted in order to reduce possible misalignment, minor radial misalignment (up to 0.5 mm) due to tolerances in machining, flexing of the crankshaft or wear of the crankshaft bearing cannot be excluded.

In order to minimise negative forces, CENTA has developed a new series to optimise Diesel-driven construction machinery. CENTAFLEX-KE with a torque range of up to 650 Nm excels by high torsional stiffness, yet provides sufficiently large radial flexibility.

The design principle: The coupling disc consists of high-quality glass-fibre reinforced plastic with cylindrical chambers on the outer diameter. In these chambers steel bushes with pressed on rubber bushes made of temperature-resistant elastomer are arranged in such a way that certain play between rubber bush and coupling disc is possible. This play together with the elasticity of the rubber bush results in the necessary radial elasticity.

The compound injected hub consists of the extremely high-quality special plastic CENTADUR. This CENTADUR possesses outstanding characteristics, is free from abrasive glass fibres, has metal-like high strengths and very good sliding qualities, and produces no fretting corrosion at the splined pumpshafts.

The couplings are pre-assembled as a unit and bolted to the flywheel. The splined pumpshaft is simply plugged into the profile of the hub. Easy and comfortable mounting adds the final touch to a robust and maintenance-free coupling.

Sizes 85 and 89 have the same flywheel connection dimensions as the flywheels of various small Diesel engines (e.g. Deutz, Kubota, Perkins, Yanmar etc.). Flywheel connection dimensions have been adopted to sizes 8, 16 and 25 of traditional CENTAFLEX couplings series A and H. Sizes 93 to 98 correspond to SAE sizes 6 to 11. Further sizes to fit non-standard flywheels are currently under preparation.

Showcased at the bauma, hall A4, stand 213, April 23 29, 2007.

The innovative CENTA couplings and drives are always based on the latest technology. CENTA has a long history of innovations. It has been offering a wide range of flexible couplings and shafts for almost four decades, which propelled the company into a leadership position in various industries, including marine engineering and the energy sector.
