When it comes to transmission of torque, no challenge is too big for CENTA. The enormous forces, which exert their power on wind power plants (HUS plants) must be simulated and tested when planning and designing such a plant. LORC (Lindoe Offshore Renewables Center) is a Danish Test Centre currently building a gigantic test bench called LORC Nacelle Testing which will be able to test wind turbine nacelles up to 10 MW. LORC has placed an order with CENTA to design and build a suitable coupling and overload unit for this particular test bench.
The special feature of this order is the technical requirement to design a homokinetic coupling which has to transmit a torque of 8.6 MNm and an overload unit for a release torque of 12.5 MNm. The solution is a CENTAWAVE coupling with a modular design overload unit, which protects all components against overloads by instantaneous load separation. The coupling will have a length of approx. 3.2 m and an outer diameter of about 3 m and it weighs an inconceivable 57 tons. It is, by far, the largest coupling ever ordered at CENTA in its more than 40 year history.
