Lightweight for marine drives
CENTA with two new sizes of its type-approved CENTADISC-C at the SMM Trade Fair in Hamburg
The type-approved CENTADISC-C by CENTA is a low weight and powerful drive shaft made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP), which is especially suited for commercial ships, such as pilot cutters, patrol boats, and rescue boats as well as fast industrial ships and large yachts. These shafts have obtained type approval by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). At the SMM Trade Fair in Hamburg from 23. – 26. September 2008 CENTA will present two new sizes, "0" and "5", of their type-approved shafts for the first time. CENTA now offers a weight-saving and flexible connection for the driving unit of all fast running yachts.
Due to their stability and their low weight, fibre composites are gaining greater importance in maritime applications. CENTA’s CENTADISC-C drive shaft is made of carbon-fibre or glass-fibre reinforced pipes and allows designs of up to 10 metres without intermediate bearings. The shafts cover a performance range of 1.6 to 40 kNm and excel with low weight, long life, and good noise and vibration damping characteristics.
Two flexible fibre-reinforced membranes, which are capable of adjusting their outer diameter jointly, are arranged in series. Thus, a double cardanic system is created, which compensates for misalignments, displacements, and assembly errors. The membranes are positive locking and connected to the aluminium cast bushes, while the bushes are bonded to the intermediate shaft and the hubs or flanges respectively. A bonding method especially developed by CENTA ensures a static safety factor of 5 times the rated torque. This method is the result of long and systematic analyses of bonding processes as well as a number of intensive testing in order to ensure a safe and – at the same time – weight-saving connection. The shafts have been type-approved by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and are available from now on.
The SMM in Hamburg will be the first venue where CENTA will present two new sizes of this series: size “0” satisfies with compact design and low weight with a rated torque of 1,600 Nm. Size “5” of this series with a rated torque of 40 kNm expands the portfolio at the top and offers a particularly lightweight and powerful connection between engine and gearbox or water jet respectively between gear-box and water jet for all fast running drives, such as yachts.
Showcased at the SMM Trade Fair in hall A3, stand 321 from 23. – 26. Septem-ber 2008.
The innovative CENTA couplings and drives have ongoing adaptations to meet the most recent technical demands and requirements. A wide range of innovati-ons has made the company, with its near 40 year history, one of the world’s lea-ding manufacturers of flexible couplings and drive shafts for industry, marine, and wind power applications.
